Do you know where your food comes from? Sabrina speaks with farmer Greg Swartz about his organic produce farm, Willow Wisp Organic Farm that is located in Abrahamsville, Pennsylvania in Damascus Township in the Delaware River Basin. Abrahamsville is in the Delaware River Watershed and only four miles form Callicoon, New York in Sullivan County. Greg’s community and customers are form both PA and NY. Last summer in 2010 a group of investors about 1/4 of a mile fromm the farm drilled an “exploratory” natural gas drilling well site up the hill from the farm. Additionally Willow Wisp is surrounded by land leased for drilling. What happens if the water becomes polluted from the drilling and the farm must shut down? Willow Wisp is just one example of what could happen to the farmland in drilling regions and the ability for communities to grow their own food and provide local produce to their neighborhoods. This is a reminder of the threats to our Foodshed in the region and the economy from a change in land use from agricultural to industrial. Can they co-exist? “No,” says Farmer Greg.
