Conventional Wisdom: The talk on the street, literally.
September 01, 2004
Far removed from Madison Square Garden, on 10th Street, in the heart of
the East Village, sat a conspicuous, vintage travel trailer emanating
sounds of the counter convention.
Inside was none other than Liberty's Sabrina Artel, who, on Friday, pulled
the jacks off her WJFF radio spot "Trailer Talk" and transplanted
it to an illegal parking spot across from the famously progressive St.
Mark's Episcopal Church. There, for the first few days of the convention,
she interviewed all manner of activists, dissidents and regular neighborhood
folk fed up with the Bush administration. A pair of outdoor speakers broadcast
the interviews going on inside, piquing the interest of the bohemian community.
It's something she has done often. In a kind of nomadic homage to the
American road trip, Artel has taken her mobile talk show everywhere from
the Barryville harvest festival to the New Hampshire primary, and interviewed
everyone from local officials to Cameron Kerry, the Democratic candidate's
brother.
In her coverage of the convention protests, she interviewed dozens of
activists and even got a few minutes with the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
"It's been really amazing," said Artel, who's trained as a dancer
and performer. "It's been interesting to see how much opposition
there is to this administration and that it's coming from so many different
sources."
"Trailer Talk" airs in the Hudson Valley as part of the program
"Making Waves" on WJFF, 90.5 FM.
